Anthony Templet, born September 13, 2001, first captured national attention in 2019 after fatally shooting his father, Burt Templet, inside their Baton Rouge, Louisiana home.
His case went viral following the release of the Netflix documentary I Just Killed My Dad, which delved into his disturbing upbringing—allegedly marked by years of abuse, manipulation, and complete isolation. The documentary shed light on shocking claims, including that Anthony had been essentially imprisoned by his father, denied schooling, and cut off from the outside world.
His story presents a deeply troubling intersection of family violence, psychological trauma, and the failures of systems meant to protect vulnerable children.

CRIMES COMMITTED
On June 3, 2019, 17-year-old Anthony Templet fatally shot his father, Burt Templet, firing three rounds that would ultimately claim his father’s life three days later. According to Anthony, his drunk father initiated a physical altercation, throwing punches at him. Anthony managed to break free and fled to his father’s bedroom, where he locked the door and retrieved a firearm. Moments later, he opened the door and fired the weapon at his father. Anthony promptly called 911 to report the incident himself.
Investigators initially interpreted his calm, detached demeanor as evidence of premeditation. However, as disturbing details of Anthony’s childhood surfaced—including claims of prolonged abuse, extreme isolation, and his alleged abduction from his biological mother at age five—public and legal perceptions of the case dramatically shifted.
CAPTURE & INVESTIGATION
Anthony was immediately arrested at the scene, after callling 911 and confessing the shooting, he was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. However, as the investigation unfolded, detectives uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse and control. Anthony’s alleged half-sister Natasha came forward with shocking claims – their father had allegedly kidnapped Anthony from Texas as a young child and kept him in complete isolation for more than twelve years.
Multiple witnesses, including neighbors and relatives, corroborated these accounts, describing Burt’s tyrannical control over Anthony’s life. Their testimonies relayed that Anthony had been denied basic human necessities: no formal education, no medical care, and constant surveillance that left him virtually imprisoned in his own home.
TRIAL & CONVICTIONS
Originally facing a second-degree murder charge, Anthony’s defense successfully argued his actions constituted self-defense. In a 2021 plea agreement, prosecutors downgraded the charge to negligent homicide, to which Anthony entered a no contest plea. The court sentenced him to five years of supervised probation rather than incarceration, with mandated counseling and GED completion requirements. Both prosecutors and family members acknowledged incarceration would be unjust, recognizing how his traumatic upbringing – devoid of normal childhood experiences – had shaped his circumstances.
